Recipe Wednesday (on Thrusday)

Got so caught up yesterday in the current WIP I spaced putting up a recipe. This is one I created last week when I decided I wanted to do something different with 1/4 head of cabbage. We like sweet/tangy food and so put on my thinking cap and came up with this.

Sweet & Tangy Cabbage

1/2 med. onion
1 small apple (I used Delicious and left on peel)
1 TBS Olive oil
1/4 Head Cabbage
1 TBS apple cider vinegar
Salt & pepper to taste

Place chopped onion and apple into skillet with olive oil. Saute about 5 minutes until onion is translucent.

Chop cabbage into bite size pieces and add to pan with water (about 1/2 cup) and cover. Steam for another five minutes, remove lid and add vinegar. Stir until most of liquid has evaporated.

Served this with sweet potato and pistachio crusted flounder.

Joyee Flynn Shares

Welcome Joyeee Flynn, our guest for today! Joyee is a new author to me and I've enjoyed reading her interview and learning about her. Her excerpt is great!

Interview:

Q: Tell us about the person behind Joyee Flynn. What got you interested in being an author?

Honestly, since I was a kid I've wanted to be one, but I've always been very numbers oriented, crazy literal and logical. I guess I just wrote for fun thinking I didn't have enough creative aspect to ever do it for real. I lost a job a few years ago and decided pretty much too really just go for it. Doing what I thought I was "supposed" to in life with my degrees in corporate America made me miserable. So I sat down and in two weeks churned out a 100k mainstream book that had been in my head.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your stories?

My dreams or nightmares, believe it or not. A lot of times I have some crazy dream that develops into something I can use in a story and I just run with it after I mull it over.

Q: Care to tell us about your latest release/Upcoming release?

Yesterday I had a new release. Isaac Dragos: Beyond the Marius Brothers #1 which was actually a demand from Stormy Glenn's & my own Yahoo Group. Isaac plays a vital role in Remus: Marius Brothers #2 and after #3 came out, they started talking because I said I was going to work on Victor #4 that was released last month and holy crap did everyone just jump in and beg for his story. Which was a trip for me because I'd never thought to give him one. I promised I'd think about it… and when I did I sit down and I just cranked out 17k words the first day I worked on it. It was CRAZY and just took a life of its own. It's chronologically after Victor #4, but since he's not a Marius Brother I gave him a spin off series name in case I come along other characters in that world that need a story as well.

Q: What are you working on next? Care to share some details on future releases/projects?

I have a HUGE project coming up, that's super secret but there will be an announcement/unveiling of it around September. I'm really excited about it because I know it's like nothing anyone's done before, at least that I've ever seen or heard of.

And one was just announced as a joint project with Stormy & Gabrielle Evans. We're doing something very different and unique. We've been having a blast working on it and we think everyone's really going to love it. www.midnightmatings.com

Q: So what do you enjoy doing on your downtime from writing?

I read a lot, and incredibly fast. It’s a very expensive habit. Other than that, I’m kind of a dork. I like to garden, make my own candles, and lots of crafts. I really don’t think checking hot guys is a hobby, but I really wish it was. I like to workout and be outdoors, pretty basic stuff.

Q: Are you pantster or a plotter?

Both. I have my books in a loose outline, most times I stick to it, adding some developments that pop up as the story progresses.

Q: Have you ever experience weird cravings while you write? If so, what kind?

Besides chocolate… Alana, the brat, got me addicted to Cheryl's frosted sugar cookies.

Q: Do you have any weird writing habits?

Yes, I time myself. I know, that's one most people don't hear. After about forty-five minutes my hands and wrist start cramping from a college injury. So I have my little timer where ever I'm working and finish the sentence I was writing when it beeps. Then I take about a ten minute break, get up, stretch, let the pup out, throw some laundry in, or other chores that bring me back to the real world for a while. And it helps me plot out where the story's going when I sit back down for the next round of writing. Q: How much does reader reaction mean to you as an author? Do you read your own reviews?

Q: Which of your characters would you most likely fall for if they were real?

That's hard to answer… it's kinda like picking a favorite family member. All of my main characters, I have at least a little bit of a crush on since they are my type of man in one way or another.

Q: If someone hasn't read any of your work, what book would you recommend that they start with and why?

I would say Micah: Marius Brothers #1. It's one of my first books that had two spin off series come of it and over all I've gotten the most positive feedback on.

Q: What do you do when your muse decides to be a pita and not communicate with you? How do you kick start the muse again?

I've yet to really lose a muse, it's more picking one while all the others stay quiet in my head for a while. But when I'm stuck or need to figure out where to go with a story I either go outside & play fetch with pup until we both burn off the extra energy or start cleaning.

Q: Where can readers find you on the net?

www.joyeeflynn.com
Facebook, & I have a Yahoo Group

EXCERPT

“He is right there,” Noah said firmly as he pointed to Remus Marius. I watched in horror as Father slapped Noah across the face. Mother fucker!

“You lie!” Abraham screamed. “You’re not a fag! It’s bad enough you’re too pathetic to be a warrior. You can’t be a fruit, too! I should have killed you in your crib.”

Large hands grabbed my arms as I tried to launch forward at Father. I pulled, he tugged, and I spun around to hit him until I saw it was Dillon. Shock filled me as I realized he was keeping me from kicking our dad’s ass. Then I got pissed. How could Dillon be okay with Father treating Noah this way?

I got one good elbow into Dillon’s chin, turning to help Noah but only to be stopped by Gabriel Marius. He shoved me hard as Dillon pulled me, and this time I didn’t resist. I was clearly missing something if they were on the same side against me. Did they think I was going after Noah?

“I was going after Father, not Noah,” I growled as they pinned me to the wall. “I thought you were holding me back so I didn’t punch him. I wanted to keep him away from Noah.”

“I thought you were trying to hurt our little brother,” Dillon answered, staring daggers at me. I felt my head snap as if he’d punched me. Is that what my brother really thought of me? I might not have been a fan of Noah being a fag, but he was still my brother, and Father had no right to hit him like that. Especially now after we found out that Noah hadn’t been studying abroad like I’d thought.

“He’s under my protection now, Abraham,” Mr. Marius yelled as they walked out into the hall.

“Fuck that, he’s my son,” Father answered, his hands bunched into fists. “He’s not going to mate to a fucking man! I don’t give a shit what atrocities you let go on in your home, but in mine, mates aren’t men.”

Is he high? I asked myself as I stared at the man I’d always idolized. I knew I was never Father’s favorite, not being the first born and all. But I grew up doing everything he’d always wanted for any scrap of affection he’d give me. I always thought I’d had it rough, but now everything was turned upside done with what I was learning. It seemed Noah had it the worst of us.

“Well, he’s coming to my home,” Mr. Marius yelled back, stepping closer to Father. “So Noah can claim his mate if he wants to. Even if he doesn’t, he’s under my protection now. If you don’t fucking like it, take it up with the council.”

“You son of a bitch,” Abraham growled, taking a swing at Mr. Marius’s head. Mr. Marius easily ducked it and landed a punch of his own on Abraham, knocking Father on his ass.

“Father,” I growled, picking the man up off the ground. At this point I just wanted to get him out of there before he did more damage to our family. I wracked my brain for what to say that would make him leave. “We’ll go to the council. There’s nothing we can do about it now.”

“Yeah, the two of you against nine is pretty bad odds.” Dillon chuckled.

“Two? Nine? What are you talking about, Dillon?” Father asked, confused as I was. Then it hit me—Dillon thinks I agree with Father. I wanted to say something, anything to explain that I was just trying to defuse the situation. But like always, no one was paying attention to me, so instead I just pulled Father towards the door.

“You think I’m on your side, Father?” Dillon asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Of course you are,” he spat out, “you’re a Dragos.”

“So is Noah,” Dillon yelled back as I rolled my eyes. Great, now I’d be stuck cleaning up another one of their arguments and playing peacemaker. “Look at the way you’ve treated him! You told us that he was studying abroad. And all this fucking time you’ve confined him to the staff house. How could you? He’s your son. I’m ashamed to call you my father. I stand with the Marius family on this one. You lay one hand on Noah, so help me god, I will kill you myself. I swear on my honor, Father.”

What has Dillon done? I thought to myself as I closed my eyes, suddenly feeling very old and tired. I was so tired of this shit. Couldn’t we ever just interact without everyone flying off the handle? And what the fuck had Father been doing with Noah all these years? My head just hurt from it all. I wanted to get us out of there and think.

“You can’t do that,” Abraham replied, his face paling.

“I can and did, Father,” Dillon answered, stepping closer. “All of the people here bear witness to my oath. Why don’t you take a swing at me?” Dillon paused, making his point that Abraham wouldn’t try to fight Dillon. Abraham knew he would lose. “That’s what I thought, Father. You only hit those who can’t fight you. Isaac, take him home, get this piece of shit out of my sight.”

I’m not your fucking errand boy, big brother, I growled in my head, knowing nothing good would come of saying it aloud. We had a big enough mess to clean up without Dillon throwing more shit my way to handle. I stared at him for a moment with my mouth open before dragging Father with me. Right then I wasn’t sure who I was more pissed at, Dillon or Father.

“I’m so fucking tired of this bullshit,” I mumbled as I still held on to Father’s arm as we got to the car.

RT Catch Up

Came home with what I thought was the RT hangover, but it turned out to be more. How about an infected tooth!!! Ouch and double ouch!!!! After several days of swollen face, low grade temp (which really makes me feel like yuk!) and a root canal and lots of drugs, I'm back on track.

Of course that means I'm also behind...as in way behind! Deadline clock ticking for next Magical Love book, house is a mess, column deadline, blog I'd forgotten and all the usually family stuff...taking long deep breath here.

That said, I'm happy to have all of that looming! Well, other than the house mess which I will close my eyes to for the most part...not to the point the TV show Hoarders is knocking on my door yet. No, I'm happy that my muse is on speaking terms these days to help me accomplish the deadlines and I'm happy to have my supportive family, even if it does mean detours on deadlines. So yes, I'm back to happy, happy me!

How about you? Are you happy this week? What do you have going on in your world?

Marie Treanor Sins

Today we get to enjoy thoughts from the delightful Marie Treanor! We've been internet friends for years and the day will come when I show up on her doorstep in Scotland! So be forewarned my friend...and yes, be afraid...with my love of Scotland, I may never leave!

A Little Humour with your Sin by Marie Treanor

Thanks for having me back in your World, Lizzie! As everyone here will know, Lizzie’s world is full of fun and humour - however much angst she inflicts on her characters, you always come up smiling!

My own recent books, Blood on Silk and the just-released sequel Blood Sin, are a bit darker in tone. I’ve been accused of torturing my own characters, and it’s true they do suffer among all that violence and sin and neck-biting. Yes, these books are dark vampire romances – or romance, singular, since they’re part of a trilogy that follows the turbulent relationship of the Ancient vampire Saloman with the academic Elizabeth Silk (who accidentally awakened him and was then thrust into the dangerous world of vampires and hunters).

In Blood Sin, just as Elizabeth is learning to live without Saloman, she walks literally into his arms once more, and has her life turned back upside down. But both Elizabeth and Saloman are stronger this time around. Saloman has most vampires of the world under his thumb and is increasing his influence in the human world too. Elizabeth is growing into her powers as Awakener and is now capable of taking on the most dangerous vampires alone. Can she prevent Saloman adding America to his empire? Could she – should she? – resist his temptations after spending more time in his seductive company? Lesser mortals might be crushed by the conflicts of loyalty Elizabeth tries to balance while avoiding the ultimate blood sin.

So yes, a lot of angst and darkness in Blood Sin! But like my characters, I prefer to see a tinge of humour in fraught situations too. Like this one from near the beginning of the book: Elizabeth has gone to a weekend party in the Highlands with her distant cousin Josh – a movie star, no less – in order to convince him of his danger from Saloman, who’s still seeking the blood of his killers’ descendants…

Even if you walk in the light, you can dwell in the dark.

Months after her dangerous encounter with vampire overlord Saloman, Scottish academic Elizabeth Silk is still trying to cope with both the demands of her ancestral bloodline—which marks her as a vampire hunter — and the overpowering desire she feels for the immortal she brought back from the grave. But she is not alone in her fascination with Saloman.

When Elizabeth tracks down a distant cousin from America, she learns he possesses an antique sword that has caught the interest of the Grand Master of the American hunters. It is the ancient and mystical sword of Saloman — a treasure of vast occult powers and a prize beyond measure to both vampires and humans. Now the race is on for possession of the sword.

Even as her enemies and allies shift their allegiances and battle for supremacy, Elizabeth must decide which will rule her own perilous fate: unwanted loyalty or unholy love.

*

“Josh! Darling!” interrupted a gushing voice. An instant later, Jerri Cusack embraced Josh, and everyone fell back to give her room. Her movements were all quick and dramatic, and she seemed to have released him almost before she’d grabbed him, reaching behind her in high excitement to exclaim, “I’ve just got to introduce you to Adam Simon!”

The name alone would have made Elizabeth turn in the direction of her grasping hand, but the speed of Josh’s spin to meet the man interested her far more. She stepped aside to get a better view, and almost dropped her glass.

He walked toward her, his black hair flowing loose over his shoulders. Alone of the men present, he wore no dinner jacket, just a black shirt that might have been velvet or crushed silk, with a matching tie that looked more like a cravat. He moved with all the grace and threat of a panther.

All this she absorbed in the first instant before his beauty blinded her, as it had always done. Yet it never even entered her head to doubt her own sanity, or to wonder whether her recognition was faulty. His mask had fallen.

He gazed only at her. She took a step toward him without meaning to, and he smiled, the rare, full smile that haunted her dreams. Shock overwhelmed the emotions struggling for release.

Then joy broke through like a tide, propelling her forward and into his arms, her face already raised for his kiss. Amber flames danced in his black eyes, burning her with the force of his desire. His mouth no longer smiled as it covered hers.

Elizabeth, he said silently. Elizabeth.

Saloman.

It was an instant, a very small instant of bliss. The powerful arms she’d never thought to feel again closed close around her, while his mouth, his incredible, wonderful mouth, moved over hers with tenderness, accepting all her need and all the uncomplicated happiness of her kiss.

But it wasn’t uncomplicated. And they weren’t alone. A fact that Saloman, clearly, had never lost sight of for a moment. Even as she gasped into his mouth, trying to force herself to draw back, to ask questions that had only half formed in her brain, he was already releasing her. Her stunned lips felt cold, her body rebellious as his arms fell away. Although the tips of his fingers trailed over her naked back and lingered, so that she stood in the circle of his arm, being inexorably turned as if to be shown off to friends.

She shivered, desperately reaching for what dignity or even sense she could muster. They were being watched by several people with varying degrees of surprise, interest, and disapproval.

As if from very far away, Josh’s voice said, “I didn’t realize you two were acquainted.”

“Neither did I!” Elizabeth hoped she didn’t sound as hysterical as she felt.

“We met in Eastern Europe,” Saloman said, and God, yes, his voice still sounded the same. A little more modern in its intonation, perhaps, but it still reached right inside her, turning her outside in. “I expect Elizabeth remembers the Hungarian form of my name.”

“Oh, yes,” Elizabeth agreed, fighting the urge to laugh.

“What would that be?” Jerri asked eagerly.

“You couldn’t pronounce it,” Saloman said blandly.

Elizabeth, who, incredibly enough, was still clutching her champagne glass, hoped she’d spilled some of its contents over his mocking, arrogant person. Lifting it to her lips with fingers she prayed didn’t shake too visibly, she took a sizable gulp and tried to think.

What the hell was he doing here? And why was he posing as Adam Simon? Shit, what had he done with the real businessman? Was he after Dante?

No, you blind, blithering fool! He’s after Josh! Josh, whom you came here to protect, remember? To warn him against this very vampire? Well, Silk, now’s your moment!
